Introduction
The Unix print queues defined on the "ccu" system recognize approximately 80 different printers across the university. Most of these are shared Novell printers owned by various departmental offices and are not accessible to the rest of the campus.
ACN provides print service only in the ACN student computing labs. Unix print queues are defined for the Epson printers that serve some of these labs. In September 1999, the print filter for these Epson printers was modified to use Ghostscript 5.50 to interpret Postscript files and generate Epson printer control sequences. This process does slow the printing, but as such a large amount of Unix printing is of postscript files, it is a necessary trade-off. We have occasionally found valid postscript files that will not print correctly on the Epson printers. If this happens, please report the problem to ACN so that we can see if a solution is possible.
Lab printer queues
The computing lab printers are draft-quality impact printers. They are self-serve, which means that you must be on hand to pick up your printout. You will sometimes need to remove and stack other peoples output, and load new paper in the printers. It is important to use these printers responsibly, as misuse causes problems for all users of the computing labs. The lab printer queues include:

These printers have filters that recognize only Epson printer files, ASCII text, and PostScript. They reject other input types with an error message printed on the printer.
Departmental PostScript printers
Departmental PostScript printers now print single-sided by default. These printers are configured with filters that automatically detect and, if required convert to PostScript, the following types of input:
- PostScript
- PostScript with HP printer controls
- ASCII text
- troff text formatter output
For other types of input, they print a brief error message on the printer. Filters for other types of files may be added in future if demand warrants and a suitable filter can be found.
Please note that you should not use departmental printers without the permission of the specific department that owns the printer.
