Introduction
Samba is a server that is running on the UofM UNIX system that allows a Windows and Mac machine to connect to a UNIX home directory and other shared resources.
- Windows Vista setup
- Macintosh setup
Windows Vista setup
There are three steps (four for off-campus users) to connecting your Windows Vista computer to a samba server:
- Editing the registry
- Editing the network settings
- Mapping your Unix home directory
- Setup lmhosts file (For off-campus users)
Editing the registry
Note: We cannot recommend manually editing the Registry and have provided the files that so that you will not edit your registry. If you are doing this on a U of M computer, you should contact your container (LAN) administrator before making these changes. This step only has to be done once.
Configuring your computer for use with the Samba server normally means you have to edit the Registry. We cannot recommend doing this manually since it is possible to damage the Windows installation.
- Download the registry file - Windows 2000 Registry Fix [dead link] - and Save it to your Desktop
- Double-click on the file Win2000_plainPassword.reg.
- Your computer will then ask you if you want to add the appropriate key to the registry; click Yes.
- Restart the computer.
If you would rather edit the Registry yourself, you will need to change the following key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters]
"EnablePlainTextPassword"=dword:00000001
Editing the network settings
Setup the WINS server information:

Connect to a network drive:
- Locate the resource you want to map, by performing the 4 steps above.
- Right-click the resource you want to map and click Map Network Drive - Windows will assign the first available drive letter, but you can choose any available letter to assign to the network drive. Note: If you check Reconnect at logon, this is a security risk. If checked, your computer will automatically connect to the Samba server and will not prompt you for your password again.
- Click Finish.
You can now use Computer to view the Network Drive.
