Overview
A virtual private network (VPN) gives you access to secured/restricted resources while off campus. The VPN uses public resources such as the internet to provide you with secure access to the UM's network. It allows the authentication and encryption of data between your computer and the campus network.
Features/benefits
The VPN connection protects university data by authenticating and encrypting data between your computer and the campus network. Use the VPN when you are accessing network resources, secure web pages, etc. that require you to be connected to the university network.
Available to
The VPN service is available to faculty and staff (requires confirmation from a supervisor) and students (requires confirmation from a professor). Contact the IST Service Desk to request access to VPN.
After access is granted, staff and students with a valid UMNetID and password can simply download and install the client software.

VPN Gateway
Use the VPN Gateway when you are unable to install the VPN client software on a computer or if you wish to access secured UM resources via a web browser. The VPN Gateway gives you the flexibility to access your university resources from any computer with a web browser.
Using SMB to map drives for Mac OS
SMB allows you to mount a remote volume onto the MacOS desktop. This enables you to drag and drop files between your computer and your Shared or Home drive.
