FTP using FileZilla for macOS

Introduction

FileZilla allows you to easily download or upload files between your computer and a remote server. FileZilla facilitates this by providing an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) which displays the directories of the remote and local computers and the ability to drag and drop files.

Installing FileZilla

Before you get started, you will need to install FileZilla on your computer:

  1. FileZilla can be downloaded for free from SourceForge.
  2. To download the file, choose the File Transfer category in Software Express and click Download Now for the version of FileZilla that corresponds to the type of Macintosh you own.
  3. Double-click the file you downloaded to unarchive its contents.
  4. Place the FileZilla icon that now appears on your Desktop into your Applications folder.

How to Quickconnect

  1. Run FileZilla
  2. In Host, enter the hostname you would like to connect to:
    • ccu.umanitoba.ca for Unix home directories
    • ins.umanitoba.ca for INS volumes (i.e. your H: drive)
    • ftp.cc.umanitoba.ca for anonymous FTP
    • For staff, corpftp.ad.umanitoba.ca
    • For students, ccu.cc.umanitoba.ca

  1. In Username, enter your UMNetID, INS user ID or email address, depending on the host you are using.

How to create a new site

  1. Run FileZilla.
  2. Click File in the menu bar, and click Site Manager.
  3. In the Site Manager window, click the New Site button.
  4. Under My Sites, select New site and click Rename.
  5. Clear the current contents and type a new name for the site (e.g. CCU, INS, etc.), then hit the Return key on the keyboard.

  1. In Host, enter the hostname you would like to connect to:

    • ins.umanitoba.ca for INS volumes (i.e. your H: drive)
    • ftp.cc.umanitoba.ca for anonymous FTP

  1. In Logontype, select Account.
  2. In User, enter your UMNetID, INS userid or email address depending on the host you are using.
  3. In Password, enter the password for your account.
  4. In Account, enter the same Username that you entered in User (above).

  1. Click OK to save changes, or Connect to save and connect right away.

How to connect an already existing site

  1. Run FileZilla.
  2. Click File in the menu bar and click Site Manager.
  3. In the Site Manager window, select the site you want to connect to under My Sites.
